  • Water damage to a recreational vehicle is fixable but must be done quickly so that wood does not rot. If carpet and linoleum floors have been affected by water, they can be pulled and replaced. If the walls are made of wood and they have been damaged by water, they must be fixed immediately or else the walls may have to be replaced.

    Identify Source

You must find out the cause of the water damage before anything else can be done. If there is a leak, it has to be taken care of before you take care of the actual damage. If this is not done, you will have to repeat the repair all over again. If you have a leak in the window, you can repair it by caulking it. If the water damage has occurred because of plumbing problems, you will most likely have to call a plumber. If the leak is from the roof or wall, it is best repaired by professionals. However, you can apply a waterproof tape for a quick, temporary fix. Most RV supply stores have this tape and it is particularly useful during wet, rainy conditions.

    Wood Hardener

You must soak up as much water inside the RV as possible before the repair process can begin. Remove wallpaper and loosened pieces of wood around the area that has been damaged. Once the area is dry and cleaned, apply a wood hardener to the affected area. This contains a lot of potent chemicals so use a breathing mask and open up windows when using the wood hardener. This will help prevent rotting of the wood. Leave the hardener on for at least 24 hours to allow it to fully dry.

    Wood Filler

After the hardener has dried for at least one day, apply a wood filler over the same area. Use a knife to apply the filler into the holes and cracks in the water damaged space. This should dry for a minimum of four hours before completing the last step in the repair process. Get some sandpaper to smooth out the surface of the wood. Once this has evened out, you can choose to stain the wood, repaint it or get new wallpaper to cover the repaired area.
