<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Mount Just Outside the Casing
You can mount curtain brackets just outside the casing around your window. This is a good option if your desired fabric is narrow or short and will not otherwise cover the entire window. You can also use this method if you have difficulty finding curtains in your window's size.
On the Other: Mount Further Away
You can also mount your curtain brackets 1 to 3 inches to the side of your window casing, and about 4 inches above the window header. This method of installation ensures that the edges of your curtains are not visible from the outside and that there is no gap through which others can look into your home.
Bottom Line
Unless the size of your fabric or window limits your curtain bracket placement, you should install the brackets away from the window's casing. Take all measurements from the places where your brackets will go to ensure you buy the right size curtains or fabric.
