<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Pruning Young Vines
Pruning and trimming grape vines is crucial when the plants are young. Trimming excess growth encourages healthy fruit production as the plant grows. You should first prune during the second winter, when the vines are old enough to have many suckers growing off of the main vines. Depending on climate, this can be done from late winter to early spring.
On the Other: Pruning Mature Vines
Grape vines should be pruned each winter after the second growing season. Starting the winter of the third growing season, pruning is usually done in a cane system, leaving only a few canes growing from the original vines. As the vines mature, pruning becomes less drastic and concentrates on spurs or smaller growth.
Bottom Line
Timely trimming and pruning will ensure a long and productive life for your grape vines. If too much growth remains on vines they won't produce quality fruit. Resist the urge to trim more than once a year.
