The medication Vetmedin contains pimobendan, which veterinarians prescribe for heart conditions in dogs. Despite its effectiveness in the treatment of congestive heart failure, Vetmedin poses a risk for side effects in some dogs.
Side Effects
Side effects of Vetmedin include vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, shortness of breath, weakness, fainting and coughing. Nervous system signs, including coordination issues and seizures, may also occur.
Time Frame
The digestive system side effects of Vetmedin tend to develop when a dog first begins treatment with the medication and gradually diminish as the dog's body becomes acclimated to the effects of the drug, according to Drugs.com.
Features
When taken at doses that exceed .8 mg per kg of the dog's weight daily for more than two to four weeks, Vetmedin may cause damage to the tissues of the heart, reports PetPlace.com.
Risks
Risks associated with the use of Vetmedin include arrhythmia, seizures, shortages of blood platelets and elevated blood sugar levels. In rare cases, use of the drug results in sudden death in dogs, warns Drugs.com.
Considerations
Vetmedin is not approved for use in dogs under six months of age or those that are pregnant or nursing. Use of Vetmedin may not be safe in dogs with a history of congenital heart defects or diabetes, cautions Drugs.com.
