If you are not subscribed to a digital cable package, then you may be paying for unnecessary equipment, unless you prefer the on-screen guide and access to pay-per-view. Typically, there is a monthly service fee for a receiver. If you only receive basic cable, then you can receive the same channels by running the coaxial straight to your television.
Bottom Line
In the end, if you're paying for digital cable, then a receiver is required. However, if you only subscribe to basic cable and don't care about the interactivity, then save the monthly fee and return the receiver to your provider.
