The blood pressure monitor was originally invented in 1881 by an Austrian physician named Samuel Siegfried Karl Ritter von Basch. His design was modified in 1896 by an Italian pediatrician named Scipione Riva-Rocci, and then brought to the United States in 1901 by neurosurgeon Harvey Cushing.
