Introduced in the 1990s, biodegradable packing peanuts generally consist of 95 percent cornstarch and five percent polymers. The polymers are soluble in water and degrade. In 2009, University of Nebraska-Lincoln developed a sustainable, but not biodegradable, hybrid. Corn starch is combined with the polystyrene of traditional packing peanuts.
