When thinking of acid reflux, sensations of heartburn, stomach pain, vomiting and burping come to mind. Associating voice problems to acid reflux may seem absurd, but it is actually considerably logical.
An Unknown Condition
According to the University of Michigan Health System, not many people are aware that acid reflux can cause problems with the voice.
Condition Name
There is a separate name specified for a condition of acid reflux that agitates the voice, laryngopharyngeal reflux disease, otherwise known as reflux laryngitis.
Process
The voice is affected by acid reflux when stomach acid reaches the back of the throat and causes an inflammation or irritation.
Symptoms
Symptoms of this occurrence include: choking sensation, sore throat, voice changes, frequent coughing and throat clearing, a bitter or sour taste in the mouth, hoarseness, excessive mucous or phlegm, sensation of lump in the throat, wheezing and post nasal drip.
No Symptoms of Acid Reflux
Many who experience this are unaware that they have acid reflux because they do not suffer from the typical acid reflux symptoms of heartburn, stomach pain or burping.
