  • Eye cancer is cancer that begins in the eye. Although scientists do not know exactly what causes eye cancer, they have identified several risk factors, including genetics and eye color.

    Types

There are two types of eye cancer. Primary intraocular cancers are cancers that develop in the eye, while secondary intraocular cancers are cancers that have spread to the eye from a different area of the body.

    Risk Factors

Risk factors for eye cancer include having blue eyes and being white.

    Genetic Conditions

Some inherited conditions, including dysplastic nevus syndrome and oculodermal melanocytosis, increase your risk of developing eye cancer.

    Certain Occupations

Although some studies have suggested that people who have certain jobs--such as welders, fishermen, chemical workers and laundry workers--may suffer a higher risk of eye cancer, none of these occupations have been conclusively demonstrated to increase cancer risk.

    Eye Screening

Eye cancer is often detected during routine eye exams. If you are at higher risk for developing eye cancer, you may want to schedule yearly eye exams.
