For the same reason that we're more afraid of terrorists than we are of septicemia: the former killed ZERO people domestically last year, while the latter averages 43,000 EVERY year.

The bottom line is that in our ignorance, we react to what frightens us, not what actually threatens us. Part of maturing as individuals -- and as a society -- is to develop the wisdom to know the difference and tolerate fear without allowing it to determine our priorities.

    One word: Jaws.

Now, to elaborate: (One word answers never seem to do it for people)

Is there a scary bee movie? Nope. (Not that I know of, anyway.)

Jaws pretty much established the mindset for the typical fear of sharks.

Good question. Personally I think sharks evoke a innate primordial fear in us of being eaten alive. We as humans, have just about managed to decimate virtally every predator that is capable of munching us to death. And as an earlier answerer pointed out Jaws didn't help much either. Incidently Peter Benchley regreted the impact his book had on the shark populations of the Western world. Luckily bees don't have similar bad press, on account of them being just a minor inconvenience to most people. Without bees we would be extinct in pproximately 6 years, so it's a good job. However we DO underestimate the importance of apex predators. Most carnivorous sharks help clean up the seas by consuming rotting carcasses. Just out of interest, did you know that more people die from a cocoanut landing on their head, than they do from shark attacks?

Well which looks more threaten? A bee that can sting you once and then die itself. Or a shark that can chew you up, spit you out and then come back for seconds? Just the sheer physical difference is enough. You can swat a bee, what exactly do you do to a shark?

Sharks can kill anyone. Bees mostly only kill people that are allergic to them. Wouldn't you rather see a little bug flying around you than a 10 foot shark with giant teeth swimming?

Not really. I'm WAY more afraid of bees. Why would I be afraid of sharks when I don't go near water?

I knew that. Sharks are bigger and scarier. I think most people aren't allergic to bees, but nobody has to be "allergic" to a shark!

I'm way more afraid of bees! I am highly allergic to them and have to have an adrenaline shot with me if I am going to be anywhere where one might sting me. Bees can strike at any time! You have to actually go wading into the ocean for a shark to attack you.

Sharks are bigger than people (well, the ones that people are afraid of are.) Bees are smaller. People are more afraid of things that are bigger than they are. Also sharks have lots of big teeth, and if you imagine it, being killed by a shark seems like it would be more painful and gory than being killed by a bee.

But if you asked me, I am more afraid of bees than I am sharks.

Actually, I'm more afraid of little fish than I am sharks . . .

Sharks don't bother me, and I swim in the ocean and go fishing in deep water - often for sharks. Bees, on the other hand, scare the living daylights out of me. I've been stung twice, the second time landed me in hospital with anaphylactic shock - I almost died. My son is also allergic to them.
