Modern mirrors are composed mainly of glass that has a thin layer of reflective metal, usually silver or aluminum, on its back. In ancient Greece and Rome, as well as in Europe during the Middle Ages, mirrors were made solely of polished metal such as silver, tin or bronze. In the 16th century, the first combination glass and metal mirrors were produced; the metal used was a mixture of tin and mercury.
