Richard Drew invented masking tape in 1925 while an employee of 3M. The invention was inspired by car painting. Butcher's paper and adhesive shielded parts of the car from paint. When removed, the car finish was ruined or the adhesive was difficult to remove. Masking tape solved the problem.
