  • Dopamine, a chemical neurotransmitter in the brain, strongly impacts human thinking and motor coordination. Many different conditions are brought about by dopamine levels either being too low or too high.

    Increases in Dopamine levels

One of the most common ways to increase dopamine levels is by utilizing nicotine, cocaine or any other type of stimulant drug. Increased dopamine levels will result in feeling euphoric and somewhat wired.

    Schizophrenia and increased Dopamine levels

There is a theory called the "dopamine theory of schizophrenia" which essentially places the cause of this mental illness on overactive dopamine production in the brain.

    ADHD and decreased Dopamine levels

Given that Dopamine regulates thought and motor activity in the brain, if levels are insufficient, the result is the trademark lack of focus and concentration that is so common in ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) sufferers.

    Intentional Dopamine increases

Often times during a myocardial infarction (heart attack), patients are given intravenous dopamine. The theory behind this treatment is that the dopamine helps to increase blood flow back to the heart and strengthen its beat.

    Parkinson's Disease and Increased Dopamine

With Parkinson's patients, the lack of motor coordination and movement abilities are directly tied to insufficient levels of dopamine production. Therefore, to remedy their Parkinsonian symptoms, patients are often prescribed the medication Levodopa, which then increases their brains' dopamine concentration.
