The prescription oral medication Agrylin contains anagrelide hydrochloride, which doctors commonly prescribe for patients suffering from elevated amounts of blood platelets. Despite its effectiveness at preventing blood clots, Agrylin poses a risk for side effects in some patients.
Types of Side Effects
Common side effects of Agrylin include headaches, heart palpitations, diarrhea, weakness, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness, body pains, shortness of breath, flatulence, vomiting, fever and skin rashes.
Features
Approximately 17 percent of patients who take Agrylin discontinue use due to the adverse effects of the drug, reports the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
Drug Interactions
When combined with aspirin, Agrylin increases your risk of developing sudden hemorrhages, reports the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
Risks
Some patients develop cardiovascular side effects from Agrylin, such as changes in blood pressure, congestive heart failure and heart attack. Agrylin infrequently contributes to the onset of interstitial lung disease, warns the U.S. National Library of Medicine.
Considerations
Because its effects upon fetal development are unknown, doctors rarely prescribe Agrylin for use in pregnant women. If you have a history of heart, kidney or liver disease, it may not be safe for you to take Agrylin, warns the Mayo Clinic.
