Brown paper bags are manufactured from mostly virgin tree pulp. In 1999, more than 14 million trees were cut down to produce paper bags for American consumers. Manufacturing such bags also consumes one gallon of water per bag and requires considerable oil and gas for extraction of raw materials, fabrication, and transport of bags.
