  • Most businesses will not accept a check without the owner's information listed on it. In some cases, the business will not even accept the check if it has the information handwritten on it prior to processing for payment. Businesses have begun to take advice of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to stop taking checks without verifying the owner's information.

    Name

Typically, you will want to use the same name that is used when you opened the bank account or even the same name that is listed on your driver's license to avoid confusion. The less confusion and less distractions there are for the business taking the check, the quicker the payment process will be. If you are a business making a payment with a company check, you will want the full name of your business listed in bold type at the top of the check.

    Address

In some cases, for personal and business checks, the use of P.O. boxes as a form of address is being used. This helps prevent the risk of identity theft or other unlawful acts from occurring. The business still has the right to ask for a physical address prior to accepting the payment. If it is not given, then the business has the right to not accept it as a valid form of payment.

    Phone Number

Putting a phone number on the check has become a strict policy for businesses to accept the check. They will need this information to get a hold of you if there is problem with the check or payment. If it is not printed on the check, they may ask you for it and write it in themselves under your other information.

    Driver's License Number

The driver's license number is another option you have to print on your check to make the process of payment easier. Most business will ask to see your driver's license and write the number on the top of the check before they accept it. This is in case the check is returned and they need to take collection action against the owner for payment.

    Social Security Number

In some cases, the owner can also put their Social Security number down as another form of identity. If you don't have a driver's license or other identification number, your SSN is an acceptable form of identification in the eye of the business owner.
