  • GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease, is a chronic disease in which stomach acid backs up into the esophagus. Symptoms include heartburn. While there is no cure for the disease, there are steps you can take to ease its effects.

    Medication

Over-the-counter medicine such as Maalox or Mylanta can help with heartburn symptoms. For longer relief, stronger medication like Zantac is available. Certain medicines such as Prilosec block the production of acid so the esophagus can heal. All of these pills are available in prescription strength as well.

    Surgery

Some surgical procedures can help ease symptoms of GERD. One procedure strengthens the esophageal sphincter to help stop acid from flowing into the throat. Another uses scar tissue to strengthen the muscles in the esophagus.

    Weight

Losing weight via a proper diet and exercise can prevent GERD symptoms. Extra weight puts pressure on the stomach and forces acid into the esophagus.

    Food

Certain foods trigger heartburn. Avoiding fried foods, alcohol, chocolate and fatty foods can help reduce the symptoms of GERD.

    Alternative Therapies

According to the Mayo Clinic, alternative remedies such as acupuncture and meditation and herbal remedies such as licorice and marshmallow can ease GERD symptoms. Before beginning any herbal supplement, it is important to speak to your doctor.
