Education evaluations assess some portion or feature of the education system. The evaluation might appraise a teacher, a class, or more broadly, a school or school system.
Function
The purpose of the evaluation is to help administrators rate the success or failure of a particular educational aspect. For example, if the majority of students in a class give a poor evaluation of the teacher, the administration can use this information to resolve the issue.
History
While evaluations are valuable, educators realized the importance of having some criterion. The Joint Committee on Standards for Educational Evaluation (JCSEE), founded in 1975, helped establish three standards.
Standards
The JCSEE set forth: the Personnel Evaluation Standards, the Program Evaluation Standards and the Student Evaluation Standards. They are three separate publications.
Features
Educational evaluations use scientific methods to analyze data, but often what they assess has a very subjective, human component. That is, some students may prefer one way of teaching over the other, which is why having some standard is important.
Significance
School systems and teachers are often awarded grant money and subsidies. Evaluations aid in deciding where best to allocate the money, and which systems are most deserving.
