"“The criterion for obscenity in Comic Market is based on the depiction of genital organs,” said Ichikawa Koichi, a co-representative of the doujinshi convention and a representative of the arrangement committee of COMIC1. “Specifically, the coronal ridge of the penis, found between the glens head and the shaft, is the datum line for male genital, and the clitoris for female genital. Direct depiction of such genitals is censored with different techniques such as shiro-nuki (omission of direct depiction), kuro-beta (painting out in black) and/or bokashi (blurring).”
The degrees in which certain depictions are bowdlerized differ depending on what type of censoring method is utilized in what kind of scene, determined by taking mainly the nature of the story and the publishing style (and responsible attitude) into account."
