If your newborn child had to stay at the hospital for something other than a life threatening problem, what do you suppose would be the repercussions of taking the baby home against the hospital staff's recommendations?

It would depend on the reason for the hospital stay. If the doctor thought it dangerous enough, they could report you to authorities for child endangerment. In most cases, it probably wouldn't amount to anything, but I would still recommend following doctor's orders, even if it means you stay in the hospital as well.

If your child is under observation then it is for a reason. Doctors do not take up valuable space in the hospital just for the fun of it - there is always a good reason, and I would listen to them and follow their instructions - a doctor knows better than a layperson if someone should be in hospital or not.

I think if the child died because you failed to provide medical care for the child then you could be held legally and perhaps criminally responsible for the child's death.

i was born three months premature, and my mom had to leave me in hospital for two months after i was born and had to keep coming up to see mr every day.

I wasn't dying, but i was just very small and not ready.

The baby might not be dying, but the doctors wouldn't say the baby should be kept in the hospital for the fun of it - theres a reason why the baby should stay there. so leave it there. they know what they are doing :-)
