Not a stupid question, just a question you didn't know the answer to at the time.

I think Descartes was trying to prove that he really existed and was not a figment of his imagination or a trick of some evil God's imagination. He said something to the extent that the ability to think you exist even if you were mistaken was proof that you existed enough to be wrong.
Now I'm even confused and I wrote it!

If you mean the ancient quote "I think, therefore I am," it was originally a declaration that "consciousness = being." But it was in a thesis about living "in the present," since our thoughts, right now, are the only things we can control. Like, "I think I'm happy, so I am happy."

It means my personality has fragmented into more than one individual, all of whom are confused about thinking and being.

I think it's proof that we're alive. having conscious thoughts, and existing, in our own minds. Cogito ergo sum.

For me it means that thinking involves the questioning of our own existence. By thinking we achieve a sense of identity that separates us from inanimate objects.

I've always thought it was sort of different...

How I think things are defines how and what they are to me. E.g. I think it is an apple, therefore it is.
