What is happening to our education system? Alot of people on here can't even spell the most simple words. Really. What is going on?

Part of the problem is that so many Americans INSIST on teaching fairy tales in place of science: Creationism for example.

I wouldn't blame the educational system. It is the users thereof that are at fault here. They either know what is proper and ignore it or they never paid attention in school so are ignorant. In either case, the responsibility rests upon the shoulders of the users, not the educators. If a person is a lousy driver do you blame the Driver's Education instructor or the driver? I think spelling and grammar are the biggest casualities of the computer revolution. It's sad.

Stupidity has somehow become hip. Look who our children's role models are: Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, etc.

Theresos definitely something wrong with our education system. It's not just reading and writing. I am disturbed by the number of cashiers who cannot make correct change, and forget finding a young person who speaks grammatically correct.

It might be lack of reading ...I think reader's tend to be better spellers.Plus I believe our educational standards are dropping ...just so everyone 'passes'. I totally agree with you...it's a mess!

Part is education, some is culture, but a lot is technology. If you notice, a lot of what is written is in web or text speak. Spelling becomes less important, thoughts are run together for lack of space, people are in too big of a hurry to proof read, etc.

Also, in some of the cases, things posted here are by someone from another country and English is their second language. Unless they mention it or you check their profile, you automatically assume they are to some extent illiterate.
