Oil takes a very long time to form, so the existing supply is being used up for faster than it could be re-formed. By contrast, a renewable or sustainable source of energy (or anything else) is being formed as fast as it is consumed. Good examples are solar, wind and wave energy since they won't run out until the sun does - which is too far in the future to even consider today.
The idea is that such fuels are finite in supply and will run out. This is based on the notion that all petrofuel comes from old decaying vegetation and "dead dinosaurs".
That classic theory on the origin of petroleum does not hold up under a number of observations. For an alternate explanation read up on the abiogenic theory of petroleum origin.

im guessing its because theyre fossils.. and fossils are like rocks.. i think. so you cant make the same rock once youve alrady like used it. but thats probley the WRONG answer. im just guessing.
They cannot be replaced and when they are all used up, that's it no more.
