They want to make sure that you don't have a magic finger that scans thru just like a credit card
A lot of cards are being duplicated with a blank looking card and just the numbers on it. Also, they have to make sure the back is signed ...otherwise the card is invalid

Any plastic card(not just debit cards) hasve digital pin #s for security. Most companies need to see this, for them to enter these numbers. Most often times, I haven't had anyone comment that they needed it to prove that the signature I was signing, was the real signature proof, of what it was on the card itself.
If you are using it for credit rather than debit they want to see the signature, debit has a pin for security.

Used my in credit, up 2 date, chip & pin debit card at a store, it read card error,during a few attempts. Used it in atm, it was fine.
