Help answer this question below.
Highly unlikely it means anything out of the norm. But...
Your computers IP address is always visible on the internet. IP addys can be used to trace you back as far as what city your ISP is in, anyone can do this. That's why porn banners can tell what city/state you are in. Authorities can obtain your address from your ISP via this number. however hackers can not. So, Do not be alarmed when you see your city on a porn ad, they know where your ISP SERVER is not where YOU are. Typically the two are in the same place so they make an assumption.
IP addys are not blockable, and are fundamental to the operation of the internet. The internet was not built with privacy or safety in mind. Quite the opposite actually, the system is intended to provide as much information about your connection to the net as necessary to facilitate fast connections. However they do not lead all the way back to your doorstep. only your ISP knows that info, and - if you are in America - a court order is required to obtain it.
Porn ads displayed on some sites that you are logged in to may use your account information to personalize the ad. This may extend to your gender, sexuality, name, zipcode, ect. This does not mean the site you are on is selling your account information, however it is likely. You should read the privacy policy of the site you are on. And you should consider removing your account if possible. If it is not, you might want to fill your info with junk to anonymous yourself.
Cookies are non-executable files that your browser stores to retain session information on behalf of sites. They do not hurt you, however they can be used to track your habits on the site and input you have made in the past. So if you have been watching a certain type of content, or have put your name somewhere on the site, ads may be able to access this to personalize the ad. Do not be alarmed, if it is undesirable you can clear your cookies, Google "Clearing cookies ". Be aware that cookies are often used to enhance user experience on websites, deleting your cookies may log you out of sites, or cause sites to act strangely for a minute. I suggest clearing your cookies every few days, in rare cases crap web designers don't write their cookie handling well and can leak information to cookie monsters. Not a serious risk, but an avoidable one.
Ads will create cookies for various reasons, typically to track how many impressions and if you clicked on them. Again, These are non-executable files, they can not hurt your computer.
Also:
Any information you use to register your comp with the manufacturer (addy, name, ect), and any databases that come pre-installed like phonebook or addressbook can be reliably mined for info by malware. I would suggest you avoiding using applications that come with your computer if you surf casually. You will not know your data is being mined.
Overall, the most common method for what you described is IP tracing. Don't be concerned, it's normal and harmless.
That was a long answer, but hope it answered your question. Practice safe hex.
