It may be rather quaint and innocent compared to other programmes and films with a similar basis, but retarded is definitely not an appropriate word to describe it.
Why retarded? Sure, the special effects were crap but then it's a show that started in the 60's. By comparison, how retarded is the Star Trek universe in which almost every alien encountered is a humanoid... maybe with pointy ears or a different colour of skin? It's still enjoyable.

I agree.
The show has succeeded for so long, in my opinion, because it never relied on high tech special effects. The plots are always more interesting, they are varied and entertaining/amusing, and most importantly the show engaged the imagination.
It's just plain fun to watch!
