renting without a lease agreement

My friend rents a room without a lease agreement. He wants move out, but the landlord doesn't let him go. so he refuses to pay rent. in the case of Minnesota Law, what should he do? does my friend just can leave without paying? does he can get deposit back?

    Generally, when there is no lease, an occupant may leave with 30 days notice. He owes rent for all of the time he occupied the space. If he has caused no damage to the property the deposit should be returned. This is general information. You can research Minnesota law yourself.

    well he should seek legal advice first,before he make any decision.But by right he can move as for the deposit that's not going to happen.
