Metakine Inc. points out on the FAQ page of its website that Fairmount, its free, open-source DVD decryption tool, is not intended to handle ARccOS-protected DVDs. Most of the users who have reported on attempts to use Fairmount to rip ARccOS-protected DVDs have, in fact, reported that it is useless.

On the Other: It Works Sometimes

It's sometimes possible to rip discs encoded with ARccOs when using Fairmount in association with DTOX or Toast. Apparently, ARccOS works at least in part by adding dummy sectors or "zero cells" to the VIDEO-TS folder in order to confuse the issue of where the data actually start. DTOX and Toast can remove these dummy cells.

    Bottom Line

It's not really worth the time and effort to use Fairmount to defeat ARccOS. By all accounts (including Metakine's), programs like MacTheRipper, RipIt and OSEx do a better job. However, Fairmount is free, and that might sway you if you have plenty of time but little money.
