The Plan B contraceptive is the brand name of a type of birth control that should be used after having unprotected sex, to prevent unwanted pregnancy.
How It Works
Plan B is an FDA-approved pill that contains high levels of levonorgestrel, which is the hormone found in many birth controls. It works by preventing ovulation from occurring, which prevents pregnancy.
When To Use It
Plan B is a series of two pills only effective within 72 hours after unprotected sex, and it is most effective within 24 hours after intercourse. You should take one pill as soon as possible and the second pill after 12 hours.
Pills
Emergency contraception usually consists of taking two pills. However, Plan B, the brand name of an emergency contraception pill, now has a one-step pill that requires you take just one pill.
Abortion
Emergency contraception, like Plan B, is not an abortion pill. If you are already pregnant, Plan B will not terminate a pregnancy, nor will it harm the baby.
Who Can Purchase Plan B
Anyone aged 17 and older can purchase Plan B over the counter. People younger than 17 will have to get a prescription from their doctor.
