  • The United Kingdom's HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) department offers the Child Tax Credit (CDC) to people who care for at least one child. You don't have to be employed to get the tax credit.

    Eligibility

To be eligible for the child tax credit, you must be at least 16 years old. The child must be younger than 16; you can also claim CDC for a child older than 16 but younger than 20 if he is still in school or under training.

    Identification

You don't have to be the parent of the children to claim the tax credit, but you must be their guardian. In case both parents apply for the tax credit, only one will get it.

    Features

The CDC consists of the family element and the child element. The family element is paid to the family caring for at least one child. The child element is paid for each child in the family.

    Amount

There is a yearly limit of £545 for the family element and £2,235 for the child element. Disabled children may be eligible for a higher tax credit.

    Applying

People applying for CDC need to provide their insurance, Child Benefit numbers and information regarding their yearly income.
