Evaluating math expressions is difficult, if not impossible, if you do not know the four basic math concepts used. Understanding these elementary math concepts will ensure that you are able to evaluate even the most difficult expressions.
Identification
The four basic math concepts used to evaluate an expression are multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.
Misconceptions
A common misconception by someone who is not familiar with evaluating math expressions is that you perform the calculations from left to right. This is not the case.
Order of Operations
The general rule of thumb is that moving from left to right, multiply first, then divide, then add, then subtract.
Exceptions
The exception to the order of operations exists when there are a set of parentheses around a set of numbers. Calculate the expression inside each set of parentheses before completing the rest of the expression.
Warning
Take your time when evaluating an expression. Going too fast and rushing through a math problem can result in making an error. Making sure you follow these basic rules will ensure that you have an easier time moving on to more difficult math concepts.
