  • Proin is a medication generally prescribed to help control urinary incontinence in dogs. It is also occasionally used as an animal decongestant.

    Identification

Proin is a brand name for the drug phenylpropanolamine (or PPA). PPA is also known as norephedrine and oxyamphetamine and is also sold under the brand name Propalin.

    Classification

Proin, or phenylpropanolamine, is a "psychoactive drug of the phenethylamine and amphetamine chemical classes." In short, it is an amphetamine, not a hormone.

    Misconceptions

Despite its classification as an amphetamine, the association between Proin and hormones stems from one of the effects of the drug. The PPA in Proin stimulates the release of the hormone norepinephrine, which allows the drug to act as a decongestant.

    Effects

Proin is most commonly prescribed for urinary incontinence in female dogs. It helps to increase the tone of sphincter muscles, including the bladder, when used over time.

    Cautions/Side Effects

Proin or PPA causes an increase in blood pressure and heart rate and can result in restlessness, irritability and a lack of appetite. Other causes of incontinence should be ruled out before use.
