Reiki sacred symbols are glyphs used by some Reiki practitioners to align and enhance their own energy. Many different symbols exist and there exists some controversy over the "right" symbols and their secrecy.
Keys
Reiki sacred symbols essentially are considered keys to a higher or more spiritual level of awareness. They allow the practitioner to enhance his energy necessary to perform a task such as healing.
The Usui System
In the Usui system, founded by Dr. Usui, four symbols exist. These symbols are based from Sanskrit and Kanji Japanese. Each has a distinctly different interpretation.
Sanskrit
Sanskrit is considered to be the language of the Spirit World, as stated in the Vedas, the oldest writings in existence. There's some controversy over the use of Sanskrit variations of symbols as Reiki is a Japanese practice.
Secrecy
Many Reiki masters believe that in order to protect the sacred symbols, they must be kept secret and revealed only to initiates of the second and third degree.
Distortions
Some Reiki practitioners consider the use of these sacred symbols to be a distortion of true Reiki. Many have become distorted over the years and are now unrecognizable from the originals.
