There are many different types of crowns. If you had this crown placed 12 yrs ago it was probably a porcelain fused to metal crown. The black area you are seeing may be a part of the metal showing. This metal used to be covered by the gum tissue, but as we age we start to lose gum tissue or the tissue starts to resorb. It is very important to visit your dental professional every six months, so if any decay has started it can be caught early and fixed.

Get to a dentist. Going black means it's dying. Save it while you can.

A cap is placed over a break/hole/chip of a tooth to prevent cavity from forming on the weaker material under the enamel of the tooth, that and for aesthetic purposes as well (good looks).

However after a few years the cap could have shifted or loosened enough to allow the bacteria and acids and sugars and "stuff" in your mouth to go to work on the tooth.

Since the nerve was removed it could be that inside of your tooth is completely rotted out and due to the lack of a nerve you haven't felt it.

Needless to say you need to get this attended too ASAP by a dentist to save the tooth, to have the cavity and rotted part removed and (hopefully) to get a new cap to prevent future damage.

Yes, it's probably gone rotten. It might be best to get the tooth taken out and a bridge to cover the gap.
But see what is likely to be the more expensive and more permanent option: getting the tooth re-capped or getting it extracted and having either a bridge or leaving a gap.

Btw, I worked with a lady with all capped front teeth that had gone black under the caps. It wasn't a good look.
