When a person is addicted to "huffing" (purposefully inhaling chemical vapors to become high), he will often turn to common household products as the substance that delivers the best trip. Treatment for this addiction, however, is readily available.
What Huffing Does
Huffing will usually produce a feeling of euphoria for the addict. She will feel as though she has nothing that can hold her back and as if she has no inhibitions. Her judgment will often be negatively affected.
Where to Find Help
The treatment center Recovery Connection, with locations across the continental United States, can be reached at 1-800-99-DETOX. Drug counselors are available around the clock to speak with people who need their help.
Things Inhaled
The list of things that are inhaled is massive. It includes model airplane glue, spot remover, helium, vegetable cooking spray, dry cleaning fluid, gasoline and lighter fluid.
Long-Term Damage
Huffing can cause severe cardiac arrhythmia. Many times death can occur after the very first "trip" a person takes. Some of the other long-term effects are severe damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys and brain.
Identifying an Inhalant Addict
An inhalant addict will often have paint stains on his body or clothing, a runny nose and reddened eyes, a chemical smell to his breath, a dazed, drunken appearance, or he might appear severely excitable or agitated.
