During the Civil War (1861-1865), the American flag had 13 alternating red and white stripes. The flag's number of stripes was fixed by law in 1818 after it was realized that adding a new stripe for each new state would become unwieldy. Instead, 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies, with a star representing each state.
