  • Dry scalp can occur for a variety of reasons, from dehydration and dry weather to overexposure to sun or harsh chemicals. Dandruff is a condition in which the skin of the scalp flakes off the body that, at least in some cases, can be caused by a fungus. Dry scalp can also be a symptom of psoriasis or dermatitis, particularly if there is also itching and inflammation. There are a variety of treatments for these dry scalp conditions ranging from shampoos and topical applications to home remedies and lifestyle changes.

    Shampoos and Topical Applications

The first line of treatment for dry scalp is topical applications. Apply oils and gels with corticosteroids or vitamin D directly to dry scalp for immediate relief. Overnight treatments of mineral oils deeply penetrate the scalp, but require a shower cap to protect your bed sheets. There are many effective shampoos, primarily those that contain ketoconazole, salicylic acid, chloroxine, coal tar or fluocinolone. Popular brand names are Denorex, Neutrogena, FS Shampoo, Capitrol, Sebex and Nizoral.

    Home Remedies

The use of home remedies for dry scalp is not uncommon. There are several different approaches, the effectiveness of which are not established by medical science. Paste of ground fenugreek seeds that have been soaked in water overnight are said to relieve dry scalp when applied to the scalp and left for half an hour. Another remedy for dandruff is to rinse the hair with fresh lime juice or cider vinegar.

    Lifestyle

The Mayo Clinic recommends several lifestyle shifts that can help relieve dandruff and dry scalp. Because sun and stress can cause dry scalp, learning to manage stress and limit exposure to sun can prevent future outbreaks. Proper diet, particularly with foods rich in vitamin B, zinc and unsaturated fats, can stimulate natural skin oil that prevents dry scalp. If your dry scalp is related to overuse of hair styling products, dyes or bleaches, discontinuing or reducing exposure to these products will reverse the condition.
