  • Of the 31 U.S. presidents who have served in the military, 24 have served in either the U.S. Army or Militia. All of these men were officers holding the rank of captain or above except for James Buchanan, who became the only enlisted man to serve as the commander in chief. Three men, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ulysses S. Grant and George Washington, held the rank of General of the Army.
