Metritis is a common condition that affects many animals. It is important to become familiar with the signs, symptoms and causes of metritis if you own a female animal.
Features
Metritis affects female animals who have recently become pregnant or given birth. Metritis is a very serious infection of the uterus and can spread to the bloodstream.
Causes
Metritis is caused by bacteria that originates in the vagina. The uterus is very susceptible to infection right after birth and this is usually when the infection manifests itself.
Signs
The most common sign that identifies metritis is a green or brown discharge from the external part of the female genitalia. Female animals also show signs of depression, fever and loss of appetite when suffering from metritis.
Considerations
Most female animals will survive metritis, as long as it does not produce other complications such as spreading to the bloodstream. Female animals that have recovered from metritis will most probably not be able to reproduce.
Treatment
Serious cases of metritis will require that the animal be hospitalized. Mild cases will require the animal to be put on antibiotics, and in some cases, the animal will need to be spayed.
