  • Chemotherapy is often an effective treatment for cancer when it is diagnosed early. This treatment is hard on the body, and patients will frequently seek treatment for the side effects of chemotherapy.

    Nausea

Patients are often given medications before a chemotherapy treatment to prevent vomiting and nausea. Over-the-counter or prescription medication is continued after the treatment. Robert Ignoffo, PharmD suggests Reglan and dexamethasome are most effective at easing nausea.

    Mouth Sores

Saline mouthwash is used to aid in the healing of mouth sores. Baking soda combined with salt and warm water can be swished to ease the pain. Cancer patients need to eat soft foods. They need to avoid spicy or acidic foods and drinks that cause irritation.

    Dry Mouth

Patients need to keep hydrated to combat dry mouth. Chewing gum and eating fresh fruits promote saliva production and lubrication of the mouth.

    Diarrhea and Constipation

In mild instances of diarrhea, rehydration by consuming fluids is sufficient, but medication such as Imodium and Lomotil will also alleviate this symptom. Constipation is relieved by over-the-counter medication such as Senokot or Dulcolax.

    Pain

Acupuncture and massage are alternative treatments for pain after chemotherapy. Doctors may prescribe pain management medication if the pain is too severe.
