Duties

A crime scene investigator's main duties include responding to crime scenes, photographing autopsies and collecting evidence. Evidence collection includes proper packaging, transportation and storage of the items.

Colleagues

A crime scene investigator works closely with police and medical examiners. They also prepare reports and sketches and often testify as an expert witness in court proceedings.

Location

Crime scene investigators work in offices where they maintain files and compile reports. A majority of the job duties must be performed on location, so investigators spend most of their time at crime scenes. Many crime scene investigators are required to work on-call, responding to scenes at any time of the day.

Requirements

Collection of evidence is physical work, requiring lifting, bending and reaching, so a crime scene investigator must meet the physical fitness requirements set by the police department. An investigator is also required to carry a firearm, so knowledge and use of the weapon is a must. Communication skills are necessary to complete written reports and interact with other department personnel. Knowledge of forensics, chemistry and anatomy are also required.
