  • Ear infections are a common condition in dogs. They are most often caused by bacteria or yeast, but allergies, parasites and foreign bodies in the ear can also cause an ear infection. Treatment depends on the cause, but most often your dog will be prescribed either an antibiotic or antifungal medication to clear the infection.

    Scratching

Because an ear infection can be painful and uncomfortable, your dog may scratch at his ears or shake his head. He may also use his paws or a hard surface to rub them.

    Odor

Oftentimes, an ear infection in a dog will cause a strong-smelling odor and possibly a black or yellowish discharge in the ear canal.

    Pain

An ear infection is painful, but because it can be difficult for a dog to communicate that he is in pain you may instead notice behavior changes such as irritability.

    Redness

A dog with an ear infection may develop some redness or swelling in and around the ear canal and on the ear flap.

    Tilting

If your dog is frequently or constantly tilting his head to one side, it could be a sign of a middle ear infection.
