  • You are driving down the road and it starts to rain, so you turn on your wipers and they really squeak. Annoying, right? Let's look at some of the possible causes.

    Dry Blades

Your wiper blades could just be dry, especially if you live in a place with a prolonged dry season,. If this is the case, then the squeaking will likely go away after some rain soaks into the blades.

    Dirty Blades, Dirty Windshield

Your wiper blades and/or windshield may be dirty. Apply rubbing alcohol to the wiper blades and glass cleaner to the windshield.

    Old Blades

If you haven't changed your wiper blades for a while, that squeaking could be telling you it's time for a change. Old blades become hard and dry, making them squeak and chatter.

    Too Fast

Your wipers may be moving too fast for the amount of precipitation. Turn your wiper interval down and see if that works.

    Other Options

Some products condition the windshield glass to repel water (for example, Rain-X). These products can help with the squeak, too.
