Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin that causes raised round or oval lesions, redness, discomfort and itching in the affected area. While anyone can get a ringworm infection, this fungus is more common among children. But with proper treatment and care, most cases of ringworm heal without medical intervention.
Medication
Over-the-counter antifungal creams that contain miconazole, tolnaftate, or clotrimazole are commonly applied to the skin to heal ringworm infections.
Natural Treatments
Natural treatments such as tea tree oil, sepia, basil, garlic cloves and papaya are believed to heal ringworm just as well as over-the-counter antifungal topical medications.
Spread Prevention
Avoid skin-to-skin contact, moist conditions, covering the affected area and contact with contaminated clothing to prevent ringworm from spreading.
Healing Process
Once ringworm starts to heal, the itching, discomfort and redness will go away; the size of the lesion will start to shrink. It can take up to four weeks for the ringworm lesions to heal completely.
Considerations
It is possible for ringworm to spread to the scalp. If this happens see a doctor immediately. Scalp ringworm requires a more aggressive form of treatment, and will not heal with the use of over the counter antifungal creams.
