The humanities are a broad range of subjects that fall under the category of liberal arts. They are forms of human expression from nearly every period throughout history and the world.
About the Humanities
Humanities courses include modern and classical literature, philosophy, fine and performing arts, history, religious studies and the study of human culture.
Purpose
Humanities are studied in order to gain understanding, knowledge and perspective of the past and current human experience and to help people respond to and connect with people of other cultures.
Social Sciences
Social sciences such as psychology, sociology and anthropology are sometimes classified as humanities. Usually only certain humanistic aspects of social sciences are considered humanities, such as humanistic psychology's belief that a person's experiences as a child may determine their behavior as an adult.
Graduation Requirements
Most college students must complete a predetermined number of humanities courses or credits in order to graduate.
Degrees and Careers
Degrees in subjects such as art history, English, classical studies, philosophy, theology and writing are considered humanities degrees. A humanities degree can prepare you for a career or further study in advertising, journalism, law, business and teaching.
