<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Faith Plays an Important Role
Faith plays an important role in many people's lives, and may even act as a coping mechanism during times of crisis. The most well-known alcohol treatment program, the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-step program, is also faith-based. Hopenetworks.org states that alcoholics who enroll in such programs are more successful than those who enroll in a non-faith-based program, as they provide a sense of hope.
On the Other: Not Every Alcoholic Is Religious
The downfall is that not everyone relies heavily on faith; thus not all alcoholics will be successful in a treatment program that advocates a focus on faith in order to obtain permanent sobriety. According to Sciencebasedmedicine.org, Alcoholics Anonymous has reported a 93 percent new member drop-out rate over a period of six months.
Bottom Line
The drop-out rate of Alcoholics Anonymous is not attributed directly to the fact that the program is faith-based. Alcoholism is challenging for anyone to overcome, whether religious or not. Still, faith-based treatment programs are more likely to work for alcoholics who are religious.
