Depressants are classified as drugs such as barbiturates and benzodiazepines. They can be highly addictive and are often prescribed for anxiety and as tranquilizers. Alcohol is also considered a depressant.
Effects
Depressants work by calming the user. In many instances the person feels tired or lethargic. When used in excess they can also have an intoxicating effect. People become addicted to the calm that is not present without the drugs or alcohol.
Function
People who take depressants become addicted to the feeling of euphoria they get when using the drugs.
Significance
People who experience constant pain also tend to become addicted to depressants because they dull or take away the pain.
Considerations
People who have issues with self-esteem also enjoy the freedom of worry depressants supply, making the substance psychologically addictive.
Warning
Since these drugs depress the central nervous system, it is very easy to overdose on them. Basic bodily functions such as breathing and heart beat need a healthy nervous system to operate. If the central nervous system is depressed too much, it can be fatal.
