<h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Amount of laptop power
The size of the laptop inverter depends on the amount of power you have coming into your laptop to begin with. For example, Laptop GPS World recommends that if your laptop uses 60 watts of power, then you should look for a power supply that provides 20 percent more, or a minimum of 72 watts of continuous power. Continuous power is important when choosing laptop inverters because it will be able to provide emergency power in case the main source fails.
On the Other: Plugging in other devices
However, if you plan on plugging other devices into the laptop---such as an MP3 player, digital camera, or cell phone---you will need additional power. Laptop GPS World recommends at least 20 percent additional power per device that will be plugged in. Going back to the 60 watt example, if one device is plugged in, then an 84-watt inverter is recommended.
Bottom Line
Determine what type of laptop you have, how many watts it takes to power it and what devices will be going into the laptop; that will help you determine how big an inverter is needed to power the laptop.
