Veterans may be eligible for a number of benefits, including health-care coverage, following military service. The Veterans Administration (VA) offers a comprehensive health insurance package to eligible veterans.
Eligibility
Active duty members of the army, naval or air force branches of service who received an honorable discharge may be eligible for health-care benefits. Veterans with questions about eligibility should contact the VA for additional information.
Covered Services
The health-care package includes preventive care services (such as routine physical examinations and health assessments); diagnostic and treatment services, including medical and mental health care; and inpatient and outpatient medical treatment at VA health-care facilities.
Prescription Medications
The health-care package includes prescription and nonprescription medications, along with many medical supplies. Typically, the VA requires prescription medications to be prescribed by a physician employed with the VA. However, some prescriptions written by non-VA employed physicians may be covered.
Bereavement Counseling
Veterans Administration health-care facilities offer bereavement counseling to veterans and their family members who receive VA health benefits. Family members of active personnel who died while in service may be eligible to receive counseling at VA facilities.
Blind Veterans
Special services for blind veterans are offered through the visual impairment services coordinator at VA health-care facilities. These benefits may include a health assessment by VA health-care providers, vision aids and training, home structural changes or modified housing for the blind, a guide dog and training to use the dog.
