  • <h4 class="dechead">On One Hand: Quartz Heaters Are Very Efficient

Quartz heaters are radiant space heaters that warm objects instead of air. For the first two to three hours of use they are more efficient than convection space heaters designed to warm the air flow around the objects. They are definitely better for heating spaces that are well-insulated and occupied for short periods of time such as garages, workrooms, and basements because they use less energy than similar convection heaters.

On the Other: Quartz Heaters Have Drawbacks

Space heaters of almost any kind are expensive to operate when compared with any form of central heating, even oil. Most quartz heaters use electricity to heat a set of quartz rods and reflect the heat into the room. The quartz rods do wear out and need to be replaced from time to time, and the heaters themselves are dangerous if left unattended. Most quartz heaters have features to prevent them from being tipped over because of the danger of fire. Electricity is not the most environmentally friendly or economic energy source.

    Bottom Line

Quartz heaters are better for warming hands and feet in an enclosed space that is used for periods of less than three hours. For a room that is occupied for longer periods, a quartz heater is best used for short periods when extra warmth is desired in a particular space. Quartz heaters are not a good substitute for good insulation and a functional central heating system.
